Designer children’s wear doesn’t have to break the bank

EASTON While living in New York City, Crystal Herrmann knew many moms who, being surrounded by the fashion industry, loved designer children’s clothing.Their tastes proved to be influential, as Herrmann took a liking to the attire herself once she and her husband, Kurt, began having children. As the fashion-savvy mother of twin girls, Herrmann found herself spending hundreds of dollars on special occasion dresses that were, at the most, worn once before her now 3-year-olds Scarlett and Maple outgrew them.

“You can spend so much on an outfit, and then literally within two weeks, it doesn’t fit anymore,” said Herrmann, an Easton resident. After acquiring a closet-full of outgrown silk party dresses, cashmere sweaters and even such far-out items as girls’ capelettes, and adding up the thousands of dollars spent on these designer labels, Herrmann thought, “There’s got to be a better way. But, in all her research, there wasn’t.

So Herrmann decided to start Fanciu, an online business based out of her Easton Village home that allows parents to rent designer special occasion wear for girls and boys, sizes 2T to 12.Fanciu launched in July, carrying such designers as Baby Dior, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Baby CZ, Isabel Garreton and Lotusgrace. With a background in website design and ties to the fashion industry, Herrmann has built the business entirely herself, designing the website in a matter of weeks and traveling to New York to handpick the clothing.
